Description
Thermo Scientific Gemini is a unique mobile spectrometer from Thermo Scientific (USA). The Raman spectrometer with a flexible probe (FD RMX) and the FT-IR spectrometer (such as the TD FTX) are now combined into one instrument. Thus, there is a device that offers the widest possible range of analyses for substances with a vibrating molecular spectrum.
The Raman spectrometer allows for non-contact measurements. It can be measured through transparent and semi-transparent packaging.
The FT IR spectrometer can analyze very small amounts. It can also analyze swabs or substances that show strong fluorescence with Raman spectrometry. This spectrometer features several new enhancements that enhance safety. This allows for safe measurement of almost all explosive and temperature-sensitive samples.
The Thermo Scientific Gemini Analyzer is the only handheld device that uses both Raman spectroscopy and FTIR. It has been successful in finding and identifying illegal drugs. These two techniques are complementary in helping a user identify unknown substances in the field.
Raman spectroscopy and FTIR can identify illicit drugs in high concentrations in mixtures and in pure form. Recently, there has been an increase in very low amounts (1 to 10 wt%) of illegal drugs. These drugs include heroin, fentanyl, and fentanyl analogs found in pills and powders.
The detection of such drugs in low concentrations with standard Raman and FTIR spectroscopies is challenging. To help law enforcement find lower drug levels in the field, the LowDoseID™ Gemini Analyzer has two new features. It now includes a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based H-Kit and a second identification algorithm called Screener.

Redefining how agencies perform narcotic and chemical identification

The tough and compact Gemini Analyzer meets the needs of elite military and public safety teams. It helps operators complete their missions quickly, safely, and accurately.
The Gemini analyzer is the only handheld tool in the world. It combines both FTIR and Raman spectroscopies in one device. These two spectroscopies work well together. They help users identify unknown substances in the field more easily.
The graphical interface ensures that minimal training is required for proficiency. Operators can easily navigate features using either the tactile keypad or the resistive touch screen, even when wearing protective gloves.
Gemini is built to handle tough conditions. It meets the latest military standards for durability. This includes drop, shock, vibration, temperature, and immersion tests.
The Gemini Analyzer is the recipient of:
- Gold Medal in the Forensics and Security category at the 2016 Edison Awards. These awards recognize outstanding achievements in human-centered design and innovation.
- The Editor’s Choice Award in the Analytical Test category was given at the 2015 R&D 100 awards. This award honors the most innovative achievements of the year across various industries.
- Bronze Innovation Award at Europoltech in the Supermodern 2015 Programme
- “Received a “Highly Commended” award at the ADS Security Innovation Awards 2015. This took place at the Security and Policing Conference in the UK.”
- Pharmaceutical Manufacturing All-Star Innovators Award in “Analytical and Monitoring Devices” Category
LowDoseID for the detection of low concentration illicit drugs

The Gemini Analyzer with LowDoseID offers enhanced detection capabilities for illicit drugs, thanks to the addition of the SERS H-Kit and Screener algorithm enhancements. These new device capabilities provide low concentration detection of drugs in mixtures and pills.
Flexible approaches to scanning

Gemini with LowDoseID offers two formats for scanning. ID mode is ideal for advanced users looking for chemical identification. Screener mode offers a simpler interface, focused on low-concentration narcotics detection.
ID Mode
- Utilizes both Raman & FTIR technology
- Provides complementary and confirmatory results
- Ideal for advanced users
- General characterization of chemicals
- HazMasterG3 Software (add on capability)
- Determine potential hazardous material being made from on-site chemicals
- Determine what HME formula ingredients are missing
Screener Mode (available with LowDoseID)
- Utilizes Raman and SERS
- Ideal for all user levels
- Narcotics identification
- Direct Scan: analysis via holder or probe, substances that are pure or in high concentration
- Type H Scan: substances present in low concentration, items with fluorescence issues
Scan delay
In addition to the Raman scan delay, adjustable laser power, and other built-in safety features, Gemini introduces the industry’s first FTIR scan delay, enabled by the motorized anvil.
HazMasterG3 Chemical Identification Software

HazMasterG3, from Alluviam LLC, is an advanced decision support tool that has been integrated into handheld chemical identification instruments. The system provides key chemical insights to help interpret the analyzer’s results and provides situational awareness of potential hazards associated with a cache of chemicals, radiation readings, or an unknown piece of ordnance.
The intuitive software helps answer real-world, on-site questions, enabling investigators to provide a more meaningful response. Rather than being a simple identifying component, the interactive system can help determine what chemical components are likely being used to formulate a substance, how much could be made, what the missing components are, what could be used to synthesize the missing elements, etc.
It is the only CBRNE / HME / IED support software to have earned a US Department of Homeland Security certification for approved anti-terrorism technology.
